Clindamycin HCl
Indications/Uses
Serious infections caused by clindamycin-susceptible strains of streptococci, pneumococci & staphylococci eg, serious resp tract infections eg, empyema, anaerobic pneumonitis infections eg, peritonitis & intra-abdominal abscess; female pelvis & genital tract infections eg, endometritis, non-gonococcal tubo-ovarian abscess, pelvic cellulitis & post-op vag cuff infection; skin & soft tissue infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 600-1,800 mg daily divided in 2, 3 or 4 equal doses. Childn >1 mth Serious infection 8-16 mg/kg daily in 3 or 4 equal doses. More severe infection 16-20 mg/kg daily in 3 or 4 equal doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water & in an upright position.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin. Newborns.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if hypersensitivity or severe skin reactions occur. Not to be used in meningitis, nonbacterial infections eg, URTI. Pseudomembranous & severe colitis; Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Perform hepatic & renal function test in prolonged therapy. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Pseudomembranous colitis; eosinophilia; thrombophlebitis; diarrhoea; maculopapular rash; abnormal LFT.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced action of other neuromuscular blocking agents. Reduced clearance w/ CYP3A4/5 inhibitors. Increased clearance w/ CYP3A4/5 inducers. Monitor for loss of effectiveness w/ strong CYP3A4 inducers eg, rifampicin.
